Toys are instrumental in bringing joy to kids of all ages ranging from age 0 to age 18, at the most. Based on the age of the child, his/her likes and preferences for the toys change. It plays an important role in the mental health, well being, and social interaction of the child irrespective of the gender, race, or geographical location.
Anything can be considered as a toy as long as it can bring pleasure and fun, and most importantly, companionship for kids in a playful atmosphere. Even though they are related to children, adults and grown ups can also play with toys. Most recent example for this would be the Nintendo or Wii or nearly anything that can reinforce the social ties and reminisce on the cultural heritage and their roots.
The use of it is dated back to the prehistoric times where the evidence shows that children back then played with dolls made in the form of animals or human beings. It is understood that way back from the 14th century, they exist for the purpose of amusement and learning in a creative way.
The materials that are used to make them has undergone great evolution from the prehistoric times ranging from stones and clay to wood, wax, and yo-yos to the most recent cloths, plastic, and synthetic fibers. At this point, it is interesting to note that back then, toys were made by the children themselves or their families. Now it is a full-fledged business calling for mass manufacturing and grand scale distribution.
When we talk about the child development, it is crucial to note that toys play a very important part in their brain development through educational toys like puzzles and creativity oriented Play-Doh. They can be also gender oriented like Barbie dolls and Princess Series of dolls for girls and Tank and Carz series for boys.
This compartmentalization enables the manufacturer to concentrate on the target market and their likes and dislikes based on the popularity of a particular toy leading to the strengthening one line of production or shut down another line of production. The game is based on profit.
The toy industry has a major share in the country’s economic stand. The toy business boom in the holiday seasons of Christmas, March break, or Easter. An interesting trend we find these days is that parents are willing to spend any amount of money to buy a favorite toy for their child and go to any extent to acquire one.
Now, it’s getting hard for the manufacturer to produce toys that caters to the liking of children who are under the great influence and impact of television and internet where every new invention and discovery quickly goes redundant. As a result of all these changes, in recent years, prototypes with complicated instruction manuals which make it difficult to operate or toys accompanied with ear piercing sounds and flashing lights reign the market. Toys have come a long way deviating from its original purpose of offering the child simple pleasure to the stage of staying current with the competition and gaining market share in the economy.
